PKC-ERCP link project
PKC-ERCP is the Modified Parbati–Kalisindh–Chambal link: it joins Madhya Pradesh's components in the Kuno, Parbati and Kalisindh sub-basins with the components of Rajasthan's Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP).
| Date | Step |
|---|---|
| November 2017 | Rajasthan submitted the ERCP detailed project report to the Central Water Commission (CWC); its appraisal could not move further because the project was planned on 50 percent dependable yield, against the norm of 75 percent. |
| 13 December 2022 | The Special Committee for Interlinking of Rivers, in its 20th meeting, approved the Modified PKC-ERCP link as part of the National Perspective Plan and declared it a priority link project. |
| 28 January 2024 | Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and the Ministry of Jal Shakti signed an MoU in New Delhi on the broad planning of the link and the preparation of its DPR. It is the second project under the national perspective plan for river linking: drinking and industrial water for 13 districts of eastern Rajasthan and the Malwa and Chambal regions of Madhya Pradesh, and irrigation of 2.8 lakh ha or more in each state. |
| 5 December 2024 | Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and the Union Government signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for implementing the link. |
| 1 December 2025 | Rajya Sabha reply: the detailed project reports for Rajasthan's components were completed and submitted to the CWC for techno-economic appraisal. |
- The idea, as the Ministry of Jal Shakti's reply of 24 July 2023 puts it: move surplus monsoon water of the Kalisindh, Parvati, Mej and Chakan sub-basins within the Chambal basin to the water-deficit Banas, Gambhiri, Banganga and Parbati sub-basins (this Parbati is a different river from the Parvati above, in the deficit east); the same reply gives ERCP's irrigation as about 2.82 lakh ha.
Central irrigation scheme
- Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY): the central umbrella scheme for irrigation, launched on 1 July 2015, with the Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme, Har Khet Ko Pani and Watershed Development among its components; the Union Budget 2026-27 allocated ₹6,587 crore to it.
Remember: often mixed up
- Gang Canal or Indira Gandhi Canal: the Gang Canal was opened on 26 October 1927 by the Viceroy, Lord Irwin, and named after Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner · the Indira Gandhi Canal was planned in 1948 and its foundation stone laid in 1958.
