The Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, closed on 4 October 2026. India finished fourth on the medal table with 85 medals: 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze; China topped the table, followed by Japan and South Korea. Trap shooter Neeru Dhanda carried India's flag at the closing ceremony, and the Olympic Council of Asia handed the flag to Doha, Qatar, host of the 2030 Games.

India win both men's and women's hockey gold at Asian Games 2026 for the first time

On 2 October 2026, India's women beat China 1-0 (Lalremsiami scoring) to win their first Asian Games hockey gold since 1982. On 3 October, the men beat Malaysia 5-1 at Kakamigahara, Japan, defending an Asian Games title for the first time; captain Harmanpreet Singh scored twice. It was the first time India won both hockey golds at the same Asian Games, and the gold medals earned both teams direct places at the LA 2028 Olympics.

India beat Pakistan by 19 runs to retain Asian Games men's cricket gold

On 3 October 2026, India beat Pakistan by 19 runs in the men's cricket final of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games at Nisshin, Japan, to retain the gold they won in 2023. India made 211/6 and Pakistan replied with 192/6. India's women had also won cricket gold at these Games, so India again took both titles, as at Hangzhou 2023.

46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand: India win Open silver and Women's bronze

The 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad ended at Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on 27 September 2026. Host Uzbekistan won the Open gold, with India silver and Germany bronze. In the Women's section China won gold, Kazakhstan silver and India bronze.

Asian Games 2026: India's women retain cricket gold, beating Sri Lanka – India's first gold of the Games

India beat Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the women's cricket final at Korogi Sports Park, Nisshin (Japan), on 22 September 2026 to retain the Asian Games title, led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur. India scored 216/3, with Smriti Mandhana making 79 – the highest total in women's cricket at the Asian Games. It was India's first gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.

US Open 2026: Alexander Zverev and Elena Rybakina win the singles titles

Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan beat defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 on 12 September 2026 to win her first US Open and third Grand Slam title. On 13 September, Germany's Alexander Zverev beat Ben Shelton of the USA 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 in the men's final. Zverev had also won the French Open (Roland Garros) in June 2026.

R. Praggnanandhaa became the first Indian to win the Grand Chess Tour, defeating defending champion Fabiano Caruana of the USA 15-13 in the final of the 2026 Grand Chess Tour Finals in St. Louis. After trailing in the classical games, he won the rapid section and held on in blitz. The title carried a $200,000 first prize.

Treesa Jolly–Gayatri Gopichand win India's first women's doubles medal at badminton Worlds since 2011

At the BWF World Championships in New Delhi, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand beat world No. 4 Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian of China 16-21, 21-15, 21-13 on 21 August 2026 to reach the semi-finals, assuring a medal. They lost the semi-final to China's Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning 21-18, 13-21, 8-21 and took bronze. It was India's first women's doubles medal at the Worlds since Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa's bronze in 2011.

Glasgow Commonwealth Games end; India 4th with 39 medals including 13 gold

The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow (23 July–2 August 2026) ended on 2 August with India fourth in the medal table with 39 medals: 13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze. Australia topped the table. Women won 8 of India's 13 golds, and boxers won a record seven gold medals.

P.V. Sindhu becomes first Indian to win the Japan Open (Super 750) badminton title

On 19 July 2026, P.V. Sindhu beat Japan's Akane Yamaguchi 21-17, 21-17 in the women's singles final of the Japan Open. She became the first Indian to win this BWF Super 750 title. It was her first title in over two years.

Wimbledon 2026: Jannik Sinner retains men's title; Linda Nosková wins women's singles

Italy's Jannik Sinner beat Germany's Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon 2026 men's singles final for his second straight Wimbledon title and fifth Grand Slam singles title. On 11 July, Czech player Linda Nosková beat compatriot Karolína Muchová 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 to win her first Grand Slam title.

Spain win second FIFA World Cup, beating Argentina 1-0 after extra time

Spain won the FIFA World Cup 2026, held in the USA, Canada and Mexico, by beating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final in New Jersey. Ferran Torres scored the winning goal. It was Spain's second men's World Cup title, after 2010.

Anahat Singh becomes first Indian to win the World Junior Squash Championships title

Anahat Singh won the girls' singles title at the World Junior Squash Championships at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada, beating Egypt's Ruqayya Salem 11-3, 11-7, 11-9 in the final. She is the first Indian squash player to win the junior world title. The win ended Egypt's 16-year hold on the girls' title.

Lionel Messi scores his 17th World Cup goal, breaking Miroslav Klose's men's record of 16

At the FIFA World Cup 2026, Argentina's Lionel Messi scored against Austria in Dallas on 22 June 2026 (US time) for his 17th World Cup goal. This broke the men's record of 16 held by Germany's Miroslav Klose and equalled Brazil's Marta's overall record of 17 across men's and women's World Cups. The 2026 World Cup is co-hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico.

India beat New Zealand 2-0 in Auckland to win FIH Hockey Women's Nations Cup, earn Pro League spot

On 21 June 2026 India's women's hockey team beat hosts New Zealand 2-0 in the final of the FIH Hockey Women's Nations Cup in Auckland, with goals by Navneet Kaur and Sunelita Toppo. It is India's second Nations Cup title, won unbeaten, and earns promotion to next season's FIH Hockey Women's Pro League. Lalremsiami was Player of the Match in the final.

Alexander Zverev wins French Open 2026, his first Grand Slam, beating Flavio Cobolli in five sets

On 7 June 2026 Germany's Alexander Zverev won the French Open men's singles title, beating Italy's Flavio Cobolli 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1 at Roland Garros. It was his first Grand Slam title after three lost major finals. He is the first German man to win the French Open since Henner Henkel in 1937.

R Praggnanandhaa becomes the first Indian to win the Norway Chess title

In June 2026 R Praggnanandhaa won Norway Chess in Oslo, the first Indian to take the title. He beat Germany's Vincent Keymer in the final round to finish on 18 points, after earlier wins over Alireza Firouzja, Magnus Carlsen and world champion D Gukesh. PM Modi called it an incredible milestone.

RCB beat Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad final to win back-to-back IPL titles

On 31 May 2026 Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat Gujarat Titans by five wickets in the IPL 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, chasing 156. Virat Kohli scored an unbeaten 75 off 42 balls, with a 25-ball fifty. RCB became the third team, after Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, to win consecutive IPL titles.

Amar Singh Devanda wins gold with 282.881 km as India retain IAU 24-hour Asia-Oceania men's title

At the IAU 24-Hour Asia and Oceania Championship in Hirosaki, Japan, on 23-24 May 2026, India's Amar Singh Devanda won the men's gold by running 282.881 km. Indians took all three men's individual medals, with Geeno Antony second. The Indian men's team won gold with 815.833 km, India's third straight title after 2022 and 2024.

China win Thomas Cup, South Korea win Uber Cup in Horsens, Denmark

The finals of the BWF Thomas and Uber Cup 2026 were played on 3 May 2026 in Horsens, Denmark. China beat France 3-1 to win the men's Thomas Cup. South Korea beat defending champions China 3-1 to win the women's Uber Cup, their third title after 2010 and 2022.

Mittal family and Adar Poonawalla agree to buy Rajasthan Royals for about Rs 15,660 crore

On 3 May 2026 a consortium of Lakshmi N. Mittal, Aditya Mittal and Adar Poonawalla agreed to acquire IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals in a deal of about Rs 15,660 crore (around USD 1.65 billion). It also covers Paarl Royals (SA20) and Barbados Royals (CPL). The Mittal family will hold about 75% and Poonawalla about 18%, subject to approvals from the BCCI, the Competition Commission of India and the IPL Governing Council.

India win record 6th U-19 World Cup, beating England by 100 runs; Vaibhav Suryavanshi hits 175

On 6 February 2026, India won the ICC U-19 Men's World Cup for a record sixth time, beating England by 100 runs in the final at Harare, Zimbabwe. Costa Rica's Amelia Valverde appointed head coach of India's senior women's football team

On 20 January 2026, the All India Football Federation appointed Amelia Valverde of Costa Rica as head coach of the Indian senior women's national team. She coached Costa Rica's women's team from 2015 to 2023, taking it to the 2015 and 2023 FIFA Women's World Cups. India were preparing for the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026 in Australia.
