The 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi (born 1869) was marked on 2 October 2026, along with the birth anniversary of former PM Lal Bahadur Shastri (born 1904). The UN observes 2 October as the International Day of Non-Violence under General Assembly resolution 61/271 of 15 June 2007, moved by India. The day is also Swachh Bharat Diwas, which closed the Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign (17 September–2 October) on the theme 'Swachhata Mein Sahbhag, Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat'.

WEF Travel & Tourism Development Index 2026: India ranked 31st of 110 economies; Japan tops

In the World Economic Forum's Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI) 2026, released in September, India was ranked 31st among 110 economies, an improvement on its 2024 position. Japan was first, followed by the United States, Spain, Australia and France. India is among the top 10 for cultural World Heritage sites, and 101 of the 110 economies improved their scores since 2024.

The 11th Ayurveda Day was observed on 23 September 2026 with the theme ‘Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow’, with the main national event in Nagpur. A study by RIS (Research and Information System for Developing Countries) released there put India's Ayush services economy at $36.92 billion in 2024-25. Ayurveda is the largest Ayush system, with about 48% of the sector's revenue.

GFCI 40: GIFT City climbs nine places to 37th and enters Asia-Pacific top 15

In the 40th Global Financial Centres Index (GFCI 40), released in September 2026, GIFT City rose nine places from 46th to 37th. It also entered the top 15 financial centres of the Asia-Pacific region, the only Indian centre in that group, and improved its FinTech rank from 29th to 26th.

World Elephant Day: national event held in Visakhapatnam on 13 August; Gaj Gaurav Awards presented

India's national observance of World Elephant Day 2026 was held on 13 August 2026 in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, where Union Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh presented the Gaj Gaurav Awards for elephant conservation. India is home to about 60% of the world's wild Asian elephants and has 33 Elephant Reserves and 150 identified elephant corridors. Project Elephant was launched in 1992.

NITI Aayog's first Investment Friendliness Index: Gujarat tops, Maharashtra 2nd, Tamil Nadu 3rd

On 17 July 2026, NITI Aayog released the Investment Friendliness Index 2026, assessing all 28 states and 8 UTs on 84 indicators under eight pillars, with infrastructure carrying the highest weight (25%). Among large states, Gujarat ranked first (56.6), followed by Maharashtra (53.7) and Tamil Nadu (53.3). Uttarakhand led the hilly and north-eastern states and Goa topped the group of UTs and city-states.

MoSPI releases first trial Index of Services Production with base year 2024-25

In mid-July 2026, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released India's first (trial) Index of Services Production, a monthly measure of activity in the formal services sector. It has base year 2024-25, covers 19 sub-sectors (nearly 60% of the services sector) and starts with April 2026 data. It is built from administrative data, including GST records.

UNCTAD data: India became world's top ship recycling nation in 2025 with 35.4% global share

As per a UNCTAD report cited by the government on 22 June 2026, India was the world's top ship recycling nation in 2025, with a 35.4% global share (up from 30.1% in 2024) and about 2.99 million gross tonnes recycled. The government said this meets a Maritime India Vision 2030 target five years early. India plans to nearly double its recycling capacity by expanding the Alang Ship Recycling Yard in Gujarat.

The 12th International Day of Yoga was observed on 21 June 2026 with the theme 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing', announced by the Ministry of Ayush. SIPRI: India becomes world's 5th-largest military spender in 2025 at USD 92.1 billion

SIPRI's report on world military expenditure, released on 27 April 2026, put global spending in 2025 at a record USD 2,887 billion, the 11th straight yearly rise. The top five were the USA (USD 954 billion), China, Russia, Germany and India (USD 92.1 billion); India moved up past the United Kingdom. India's share of world spending was 3.2 per cent.

Corruption Perceptions Index 2025: India 91st of 182 with score 39; Denmark tops

In Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index 2025, released on 10 February 2026, India ranked 91st of 182 countries and territories with a score of 39, up from 96th in 2024. Denmark ranked first with a score of 89. The global average fell to a new low of 42 out of 100, and more than two-thirds of countries scored below 50.

World Wetlands Day was observed on 2 February 2026 with the theme 'Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage'.
