In March 2026 the Rajasthan Assembly passed the Rajasthan Prohibition of Transfer of Immovable Property and Provision for Protection of Tenants from Eviction from Premises in Disturbed Areas Bill, 2026. In an area notified as 'disturbed', property cannot be transferred without government permission; transfers made without it are void. The law is modelled on the Gujarat Disturbed Areas Act of 1991.

Rajasthan rolls out Semiconductor, Aerospace & Defence, and Industrial Park Promotion policies 2026

In March 2026 Rajasthan released three industrial policies. The Semiconductor Policy 2026 plans dedicated semiconductor corridors in Jodhpur–Pali–Marwar and other clusters, with 100% electricity duty exemption for seven years. The Aerospace and Defence Policy-2026 seeks to make the state a hub for aircraft, drones, missiles, radars and defence electronics, and the Industrial Park Promotion Policy-2026 allows private and PPP industrial parks.

Foundation stone laid for Rs 1,507 crore Kota–Bundi Greenfield Airport at Shambhupura; PM joins virtually

On 7 March 2026 the foundation stone of the Kota–Bundi Greenfield Airport was laid at Shambhupura in Kota by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi joining by video. The airport, costing about Rs 1,507 crore, will have a 3,200-metre runway and serve the Hadoti region. It is targeted to be ready by December 2027.

Rajasthan Assembly passes Bills removing the two-child bar for panchayat and municipal elections

On 9 March 2026 the Rajasthan Assembly passed the Rajasthan Panchayati Raj (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and in the same budget session it also passed the Rajasthan Municipalities (Amendment) Bill, 2026. Together they end the rule that barred people with more than two children from contesting panchayat and municipal elections. That rule was brought in in 1995 under Chief Minister Bhairon Singh Shekhawat. The two-child rule still applies to government jobs.

Rajasthan becomes first state to sign an MoU with the Jal Shakti Ministry under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0

On 17 March 2026 Rajasthan became the first state to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti under the new guidelines of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0. It was signed in New Delhi in the presence of Union Minister C.R. Patil, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and PHED Minister Kanhaiya Lal. The Union Cabinet had extended the mission to December 2028 a week earlier.

Rajasthan Diwas 2026 celebrated on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, 19 March, instead of 30 March

In 2026 Rajasthan Diwas was celebrated on 19 March, the Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (Hindu New Year), instead of 30 March. The state government had decided to mark the day by the Hindu calendar, because Greater Rajasthan was formed on 30 March 1949, which was Chaitra Shukla Pratipada that year. A week of programmes across the state led up to the day.

207 new buses, including 100 Blue Line buses, added to Rajasthan Roadways fleet

On Rajasthan Diwas, 19 March 2026, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma flagged off 207 new Rajasthan Roadways buses from the Ajmer Road bus terminal in Jaipur: 100 Blue Line buses, 79 non-AC buses and 28 AC buses. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 11th Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi on 5 March 2026; it ran till 7 March. Cabinet extends Jal Jeevan Mission to December 2028; total outlay raised to Rs 8.69 lakh crore

Union Cabinet approves declaring Madurai Airport in Tamil Nadu an international airport

On 10 March 2026 the Union Cabinet approved the declaration of Madurai Airport in Tamil Nadu as an international airport. Supreme Court allows passive euthanasia for Harish Rana, first use of its 2018 guidelines in a live case

On 11 March 2026 a Supreme Court bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K.V. Viswanathan allowed withdrawal of life support for Harish Rana, 32, who had been in a permanent vegetative state since a fall in 2013. The court directed AIIMS, New Delhi, to admit him to its palliative care unit for a planned and dignified withdrawal. It was the first time the court applied its 2018 passive euthanasia guidelines to an individual.

Parliament passes Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026

The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026, introduced on 13 March, was passed by the Lok Sabha on 24 March and by the Rajya Sabha by voice vote on 25 March 2026. It amends the 2019 Act: it replaces the self-identification-based definition with listed categories (such as kinner, hijra, aravani, jogta and persons with intersex variations) and brings in certification by a medical board. It also adds heavier punishments for forcing people into transgender identity or exploiting them.

Parliament passes Finance Bill, 2026; new Income-tax Act, 2025 in force from 1 April 2026

The Finance Bill, 2026, which gives effect to the Union Budget for 2026-27, was passed by the Lok Sabha with 32 amendments on 25 March and returned by the Rajya Sabha on 27 March 2026, completing the budget process. The new Income-tax Act, 2025, which replaces the Income-tax Act, 1961, came into force on 1 April 2026; the Income-tax Rules, 2026 were notified on 20 March.

Indonesia bans social media accounts for children under 16, a first in Southeast Asia

On 6 March 2026 Indonesia's Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid announced that children under 16 would no longer be allowed accounts on high-risk platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, X and Roblox. The rule began phasing in from 28 March. Indonesia is the first Southeast Asian country to do this; Australia's under-16 ban took effect in December 2025.

Mojtaba Khamenei named Iran's third Supreme Leader after Ali Khamenei is killed in US–Israeli strikes

On 8 March 2026 Iran's 88-member Assembly of Experts named Mojtaba Khamenei as the country's new Supreme Leader, Reuters reported citing Iranian state media. His father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had led Iran since 1989, was killed after the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran. Mojtaba is only the third Supreme Leader since the 1979 revolution, after Ruhollah Khomeini and Ali Khamenei, and the first to succeed his father.

Balendra (Balen) Shah sworn in as Nepal's Prime Minister after RSP wins 182 of 275 seats

Balendra (Balen) Shah of the Rastriya Swatantra Party was sworn in as Prime Minister of Nepal on 27 March 2026. In the general election held on 5 March, the first since the 2025 anti-corruption protests, the RSP won 182 of the 275 seats in the House of Representatives. Cabinet approves BHAVYA: Rs 33,660 crore for 100 plug-and-play industrial parks

On 18 March 2026 the Union Cabinet approved the Bharat Audyogik Vikas Yojna (BHAVYA) with an outlay of Rs 33,660 crore to develop 100 plug-and-play industrial parks of 100 to 1,000 acres. Parks get central support of up to Rs 1 crore per acre and are chosen in challenge mode. It is implemented through NICDC under DPIIT and is expected to create about 15 lakh direct jobs.

Small Hydro Power Development Scheme approved for 2026-27 to 2030-31 with Rs 2,584 crore

On 18 March 2026 the Union Cabinet approved the Small Hydro Power Development Scheme for 2026-27 to 2030-31 with an outlay of over Rs 2,584 crore. It aims to add about 1,500 MW of small hydro capacity and draw about Rs 15,000 crore of investment, mainly in remote and hilly areas. Cabinet approves Modified UDAN for 10 years with Rs 28,840 crore: 100 airports, 200 helipads

World Air Quality Report 2025: India 6th most polluted country; Loni (UP) most polluted city

IQAir's World Air Quality Report 2025, released on 25 March 2026, ranked India the sixth most polluted country, with an average PM2.5 level of 48.9 µg/m³, almost ten times the WHO guideline of 5 µg/m³. Loni in Uttar Pradesh was the world's most polluted city at 112.5 µg/m³, and 66 of the 100 most polluted cities were in India. New Delhi was again the most polluted capital.

First phase of Science City, Guwahati inaugurated on 82 acres

On 10 March 2026 Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the first phase of Science City, Guwahati, spread over 82 acres. Omspace launches Gujarat's first sounding rocket near Dholera

On 14 March 2026 Ahmedabad-based start-up Omspace Rocket and Exploration launched Gujarat's first sounding rocket from a temporary launch complex at Dholera. The single-stage sub-orbital rocket reached about 3 km. The launch was authorised by IN-SPACe and carried out under the Gujarat Spacetech Policy 2025-2030.

Tamil poet-lyricist R. Vairamuthu named for the 60th Jnanpith Award (2025)

On 14 March 2026 the Bharatiya Jnanpith announced the 60th Jnanpith Award, for 2025, for Tamil poet and film lyricist R. Vairamuthu. The decision was taken by the selection board chaired by writer Pratibha Ray. He is only the third Tamil writer to win it, after P.V. Akilan (1975) and D. Jayakanthan (2002). The Jnanpith is India's highest literary honour.

German mathematician Gerd Faltings wins the 2026 Abel Prize

On 19 March 2026 the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters awarded the 2026 Abel Prize to Gerd Faltings of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics, Bonn, for powerful tools in arithmetic geometry and for resolving the diophantine conjectures of Mordell and Lang. He proved the Mordell conjecture in 1983 and won the Fields Medal in 1986. He is the first German to win the prize, which is worth 7.5 million Norwegian kroner.
